Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
