The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
