RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
